For families living in or visiting the greater Denver area, the Elitch Gardens Theme Park has been a favorite for decades. Covering about 63 acres near downtown Denver, this family park offers plenty of shopping and dining surrounded by 50 rides and live entertainment. A twenty-story tower provides fantastic views of the Colorado state capital. The memorable Tower of Doom offers a 200 foot drop.

There is plenty of family fun along the Front Range, with Gateway Park Fun Center in Boulder offering go-karts, batting cages, mini-golf, plus slides and game arcades. At Fort Collins there is Fort Fun, a year-round family playground offering indoor and outdoor activities. Among offerings are bumper cars and bumper boats, laser tag, mini-golf, go-kart track, mini-bowling, and video arcade.

Families can take a trip back in time to the Old West at the Bee Family Centennial Farm Museum in Northern Colorado. Farm tours and educational programs are offered, and children can take part in farm activities such as gathering eggs at the chicken house and grinding corn for chicken feed.

The Greeley Freight Station Museum has over 600 railroad history artifacts on display, plus visitors can enter a former Colorado and Southern wooden caboose.

Colorado is a year-round paradise. The state capital of Denver has several large parks such as Washington Park and City Park. The Cherry Creek Reservoir on the south side is popular with boaters. North of Denver, it is an easy drive to Rocky Mountain National Park. The town of Estes Park is at the southern entrance to the park, which has trails along mountainsides.

In west central Colorado are the famous ski resorts of Aspen, Vail, Steamboat Springs, and Telluride. Often overlooked by summer travelers, these same ski resorts are great summer destinations, with ski trails becoming beautiful nature trails surrounded by snowy peaks.

Glenwood Springs is base camp for white-water rafting on the Colorado River, with half and full day adventures down the Shoshone Rapids. Travelers can also hop on the only zipline across the Colorado at Royal Gorge near Canon City.

On the west side of Colorado Springs is Garden of the Gods Park, enjoy picnics by a stream while looking out for bears here. Almost directly west of that is Pike’s Peak, which has the highest road in the country ending at the summit. In semi-arid southwestern Colorado is Mesa Verde National Park, far from major cities.

Many people who are thinking of relocating to Colorado should follow a few simple steps to ensure that they have a speedy move that comes with the least amount of frustration. It is very important to understand that a move like this is pretty major, but it can be simplified if you know what you are doing.

1. Always make sure that you get a good mover. This will speed up the process and you will rest easy knowing that your precious belongings are in good hands.

2. You should always be prepared for the climate that you live in. Colorado is a pretty cold place and you will probably need to make sure to buy the appropriate clothing.

3. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the town you live in. Knowing where all of the attractions, shops and medical facilities are located will save you a lot of time down the road.

4. Introduce yourself to your new neighbors. They are probably just as curious about you as you are of them. Greet them and let them know how friendly you and your family are.

5. Always get to know the local authorities. This is especially effective in smaller towns.

There’s no doubt about it, Colorado is awe-inspiring in just about every detail when it comes to its natural beauty. But equally impressive is the A-list of actors, artists, athletes, musicians, and other prominent and noteworthy people that hail from the Mile High state. There may not be a direct correlation between the two, but we thought we’d throw out a few names to nibble on should you be investigating all wondrous things about the beautiful state of Colorado.

Tim Allen: Born in Denver and went on to star in Home Improvement and winner of a Golden Globe Award.Jesse Carmichael: Born in Boulder and keyboardist for rock group Maroon 5.Lon Chaney: Born in Colorado Springs and acted in many films during the 1910s and 1920s.Beth Chapman: Born in Denver and now resides in Hawaii with husband Dog, the Bounty Hunter.Jack Dempsey: Born in Manassa and regarded as boxing’s World Heavyweight Champion from 1919 1926.Matt Hasselbeck: Born in Boulder, selected three times to the Pro Bowl, and quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.Ken Kesey: Born in La Junta and wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.Karl Rove: Born in Denver and served as President George W. Bush’s Deputy Chief of Staff.Jack Swigert: Born in Denver and served as astronaut aboard Apollo 13 as well as being elected to Congress.Bobby Unser: Born in Colorado Springs and winner of the USAC Stock Car Championship is 1957.

There are more, of course, but the above sampling demonstrates the diversity of those who call Colorado their birth state ranging from actors to astronauts and musicians to athletes; almost as diverse as any Colorado landscape.

If you’re planning a visit to the Rocky Mountains you better make sure it contains a visit to Pikes Peak, the “most visited” mountain in North America and the second most visited in the world second only to Japan’s Mount Fuji. How’s that for notoriety. Pretty lofty, wouldn’t you agree? And speaking of “lofty,” you should know that Pikes Peak rises over 14,000 feet above sea level with over 500,000 people reaching its summit each year. When planning your trip you should allow at least two hours to make the 38-mile round trip from the base to the summit and keep in mind that uphill traffic has the right of way at all times. Stopping should only be done in the turnouts provided. On the way down you should always use the lowest gear available and make every effort to not “ride” ‘your brakes since this can lead to problems such as overheating or failure. Also, while up on the mountain try to stay aware of signs for altitude sickness such as headache, dizziness or impaired judgment. If you experience any of these, the only treatment is to reduce your altitude. In the winter watch out for signs of hypothermia, and in the summer watch out for rattlesnakes who love to sun themselves. But other than that enjoy the wide expansive views and the many types of wildlife that will be present especially common are bighorn sheep and the black bear (sometimes weighing in as much as 450 pounds and standing 6 feet). And by all means please remember to be kind in your surroundings not only to other tourists and wildlife, but to the ecology of the mountain, too. Please avoid polluting streams or grounds by always remembering to dispose of litter or trash in the receptacle that are provided. With a little attention Pikes Peak will be around for centuries to come for many more to enjoy!

Wintertime in the Rockies means snow, and lots of it. The snow covered slopes of the Rocky Mountains make the perfect environment for downhill skiing, cross country skiing, sledding, tubing, and even ice skating. Before setting out on a fun filled day of winter activities, be sure to take extra supplies in case you end up stuck or trapped in a snowstorm. To avoid hypothermia, bring a change of dry wool clothing. Though the chances of either of these happening are slim to none, it’s better to be safe than sorry.Downhill skiing is possible in both the Rocky Mountain National Park area and the Roosevelt and Arapaho National Forests. To ski down a fast paced extreme slope in a Park, check out the Hidden Valley Park course. For Forest options, there are five commercial downhill ski areas: Loveland Ski Area, the Winter Park Resort, Eldora Ski Resort, SolVista at Granby Ranch Ski Resort, and Mary Jane Ski Area.If you prefer Cross Country Skiing, the previous hiking trails of the summer are easily converted into great cross country ski routes during the winter snowfall. There are also groom trail options available at SolVista at Granby Ranch Ski Resort and the Grand Lake Touring Center. If you have no previous ski experience and don’t want to take the time to learn, the small slopes of the Rockies are great for sledding and tubing. Kids of all ages will enjoy the fast downhill ride as the wind whips their hair and the snow cushions any falls. Another non-skiing option is the snowmobile. You must have a license and registration to drive one, and wilderness areas are strictly prohibited, but the winter snow is ideal for snowmobiling in designated areas.Ice Skating is another winter friendly activity of the Rockies. When the many lakes of the area freeze over, the icy surface makes for a rink of family fun.

When you journey to or through the Rocky Mountains, you can be certain that you aren’t the only living, breathing creature enjoying the natural environment. Depending on the season, there’s a good chance you’ll run into elk, deer, moose, or even coyotes and bears as you trek through their terrain.Elk are mostly viewable year round, but if you visit during the September-October mating season, it’s likely you’ll hear the Bull Elk’s characteristic mating call as dusk changes to dawn. The best places to spot Elk are Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow, and the 18-hole golf course in Estes Park. Even more common than elk, the mule deer tend to browse bushes, wooded areas, and planted gardens all throughout The Rockies.During the summer, keep an eager eye out for bighorn sheep on the East side of Rocky Mountain Park. In October-November, you’re likely to find a pair of the horned creatures in a head-butting contest on the mountainsides. They head to the south in the winter and like to travel to the roadsides in spring to munch on the fresh grass. If you’re lucky, you might see a Moose along the Colorado River in the Kawuneeche Valley on the west side, or along a scenic drive down North Park. If you’re not so lucky, you might encounter a ferocious mountain lion or bobcat. These predators keep the deer and other prey populations in check, but to ensure they don’t decrease the human population be sure you never approach one you come across, especially if its feeding or with kittens. If you do happen to encounter an oversized feline, don’t run from it, instead stay calm and give them a way to escapethey like to avoid confrontation with anything they feel is a threat. For this reason, you do not want to appear to be preyback away slowly, pick up a stick, or throw rocks/other items at it if it acts aggressively. The chance of being attacked by a mountain lion is low, but it’s important to be prepared, just in case. You’ll also need to be wary of black bears, coyotes, and foxes.
